Fundraiser for Anthony Cox set

A fundraiser to help Anthony Cox Jr.’s family with medical expenses will take place during the Caterpillar’s Hookah Lounge’s 5 year anniversary celebration from 6 to 11 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 23, at 314 S. Carson Street. Bonnie Long has a vendor set up during the event for Cox and proceeds will be donated to his family. Earlier this summer Anthony had a 16-hour surgery to remove the tumor from his brain. His family learned the following week the tumor is a choroid plexus carcinoma, which is cancerous and has a 100 percent chance of coming back with the chance of being in-operable. He’s currently undergoing chemo and radiation treatment to hopefully remove the cancer cells forever. 2015 Nevada Radon Poster Contest open to students

University of Nevada Cooperative Extension invites Nevada students to showcase their artistic talents and promote radon awareness by entering the 2015 Nevada Radon Poster Contest. The contest is open to all children ages 9 to 14 years old enrolled in public, private, territorial, tribal, Department of Defense and home schools. Children can also enter through a sponsoring club, such as an art, computer, library, reading, science, scouting, youth or 4-H club.

Posters should convey one of these messages: 1) What is radon? 2) Where does radon come from? 3) How does radon get into our homes? 4) Radon can cause lung cancer, and 5) Test your home for radon. Posters will be judged on content accuracy, visual communication of the topic, reproducibility and originality. There is no fee to enter, but each child is limited to one entry. Entries must be received at 4955 Energy Way in Reno by Oct. 31. Cash prizes for the top five entries are $75 for first place, $60 for second, $45 for third and $25 for fourth and fifth place. The top three entries are also awarded cash prizes for their teachers or sponsoring organization’s representative and are entered in the national contest. National contest winners receive $1,000 for first place, $600 for second, $400 for third and $400 for special online voting recognition. National winners will receive recognition, and the posters will be reproduced and distributed nationally to promote radon awareness. The Nevada Radon Education Program will also offer radon presentations to interested school or community groups in Washoe, Douglas and Carson Counties. The poster contest is part of the Nevada Radon Education Program and is sponsored by Cooperative Extension, the Nevada Division of Public and Behavioral Health, Kansas State University and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. UNR Cancer research TRIBUTE

The Order of the Eastern Star, State of Nevada is creating a UNR Cancer Research TRIBUTE at the Nevada State Legislature Building Sunday, Aug. 17 through Aug. 25. The intention is to put a face on cancer, while raising money for UNR Cancer Research. The TRIBUTE consists of pinwheels, each dedicated in honor of an individual and representing our collective determination to find the cure in the name of love. TRIBUTEs are dedicated to a diverse group of people, some who are presently in the battle, others who have won theirs, and to those who have been lost. Whatever the intention of the donor, it’s about love. Research is about finding a cure. One-hundred percent of the proceeds goes to UNR Cancer Research. CASA Volunteers needed

CASA of Carson City will hold an Information Hour Tuesday, Aug. 19, at 5:30 p.m, at the CASA of Carson City office, 1539 East 5th Street. CASA volunteers are appointed by the Carson City Juvenile Court to serve as guardian ad litem for a case of abused or neglected children in a child welfare court case. Being a CASA volunteer requires patience, caring, research, writing, speaking and follow-through. A background check, references, application, interview and 30 hours of training are required. ProNet Alumni Event

ProNet, a branch of JOIN, Inc., a non-profit career training agency, is holding its first alumni reunion barbecue at 5:30 pm, Tuesday, Aug. 26 at its location 1201 Terminal Way in Reno. Food and beverages will be served.

ProNet has served more than 2,500 professionals in 12 years by providing its enrollees with coaching and counseling and training in resume preparation, interview skills, leadership, and networking. Services are provided without charge and there’s no fee for employers who hire these accomplished professionals. Youth Outdoor Experience set

Western Nevada Calf Camp & Wild Sheep Foundation will take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 23 at Capitol City Gun Club, 3590 Arrowhead Dr.

Family activities this year include: LaserShot, kid’s archery, including archery trap, RMEF inflatable BB-Gun Range and 4-H Shooting Sports,. A youth shooting clinic will follow on Sunday with the USAYES Team.

The highlight of the Calf Camp/YOE is the free live auction and raffle for kids. Kids can earn Kidz Bucks at each of the activities which can be used in the auction or to buy raffle tickets for prizes.
