Another dreadful bereavement. We were startled with the sad news last night that Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Platt had lost their second child, Jessie, a sweet little girl of between 2 and 3 years of age. This case is even more sudden than that of their other little girl who was buried on Tuesday night. Scarcely 48 hours elapsed between the appearance of the disease and its fatal termination. When will the terrible plague cease its ravages?

Mr. Robinson, proprietor of the Lake Shore House, has discovered caves, which have every appearance of being the craters of extinct volcanoes, in the northern part of Lake Tahoe. The perceptible current sets into these craters and this he claims is why the bodies of the drowned never rise to the surface, but are carried to the caves.

100 years ago

The October net earnings of the Goldfield Consolidated Mines company exceeded those of the two preceding months by notable amounts. The October report shows that the company mill treated 28,651 tons of ore, from which profits of $149,373.22 were received.

70 years ago

Homicides decreased in Nevada drastically during the first nine months of this year, compared with 1943, and suicides slumped slightly. Only three of the 1,212 deaths reported were listed as homicides and 17 as suicides. In 1943, there were 16 homicides and 26 suicides statewide out of the 1,266 deaths recorded.

Nikki Claire Tyler, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Hugh O. Tyler of Stewart, has been named Nevada’s Good Citizen. Miss Tyler wrote the winning essay on the subject “Lest We Forget” in the annual DAR Good Citizens Contest.
