SILVER DOLLARS AND WOODEN NICKELS: Silver and Snowflakes a ‘Nietz’ thing in Carson City

The Nevada Appeal’s Silver Dollars & Wooden Nickels feature recognizes achievements from the capital region and, when warranted, points out other acts that missed the mark.

SILVER DOLLAR: While this community has embraced the Silver and Snowflake event which was held last week, the main reason why is because of two people, Fred and Maxine Nietz, who have poured their hearts and souls into the event for 24 years before retiring. They ensured the event would continues its success by putting it in the good hands of the Carson City Chamber of Commerce.

SILVER DOLLAR: To the following Carson High football players for earning top honors in the region this past season: Asa Carter, Sierra League Player of the Year; Nolan Shine, Sierra League Defensive Player of the Year; Colby Brown, Sierra League Co-Offensive Player of the Year. And to Blair Roman for being named the Sierra League Coach of the Year. Also, Carter, Shine, Brown an Brady Rivera were all named to the all-region first team.

SILVER DOLLAR: To Capt. Joannes Lamprecht, a 1997 Carson High graduate, who was named as commander of the Nevada Army National Guard’s 609th Combat Engineering Company in Fallon.

WOODEN NICKEL: We’ve been harping on television coverage of sports for months and our latest target is ESPN. The Rose Bowl and Sugar Bowl, the playoff semifinal games, and the National Championship Game will be televised on ESPN and not on its sister network, ABC. Again, there are still millions of Americans who don’t have cable, so televising the year’s biggest games on a cable network and not on ABC is a disservice. The reason for this is ESPN is still under the delusion it may someday have the chance to broadcast the Super Bowl. It wants to show the NFL the college games will receive high ratings on cable — even though it would receive higher ratings on ABC.
