The Nevada Appeal’s Silver Dollars & Wooden Nickels feature recognizes achievements from the capital region and, when warranted, points out other acts that missed the mark.
SILVER DOLLAR: In this season of giving, we are giving out Silver Dollars all around. Whether you have reached in your pocket and donated a nickel, a dollar or a hundred dollars to the Salvation Army’s Red Kettle campaign, or adopted a family through an Angel Tree or volunteered your time, you have taken an important step toward making a difference in our community. We can’t possibly list all the great causes and good deeds going on in our community during the holidays, but what we can say is, “thank you” for bringing joy to others.
SILVER DOLLAR: To the Nevada 150 Commission for all of its work on planning, organizing and executing events based around Nevada’s sesquicentennial. The commission capped its work Monday by burying a time capsule to be opened 50 years from now when the state celebrates its bicentennial. Among the items included in the capsule were the commemorative belt buckle, copper medallions, a copy of the official poem, “Dame Nevada,” lapel pins, T-shirts and flash drives of Nevadans stories, Nevadan authors and the planning committee report.
“We have preserved a Nevada they will be proud of,” Gov. Brian Sandoval said. “They will look back and say, ‘They got it right.’”
SILVER DOLLAR: To Carson City Treasurer Al Kramer for his nearly two decades of service in that office. He is leaving in January to work in the Nevada Treasurer’s office. Kramer was first elected to the post in 1995.
SILVER DOLLAR: To Kyle Horvath for stepping up to become president of the board of directors of the Brewery Arts Center. The BAC’s success is vital for the arts community and Carson City as a whole. Horvath is bringing a smart approach to making the BAC successful.
“We’re kind of in strategic planning mode,” Horvath said. “We’re coming up with not just quick fixes, but a long-term vision.”
