Murphy execution (continued from Thursday; taken out of date from Dec. 28). This settles this wretched man’s fate. He will be hanged today about the hour of 2 o’clock. Thus will be brought to a close this most sad, painful and peculiar tragedy. Murphy, upon being told of the decision of the Board, launched out a volley of curses. There seems to be no relaxation in his peculiar notions concerning life, death and futurity. (Continued on Saturday).

The past few days have caused the waves of adverse fortune to break over William Sharon. The ordering of an accounting of the Ralston estate and the decision of Judge Sullivan in the divorce case. The finding of the divorce case shows pretty conclusively that there is in fact one judge, at least, in San Francisco that Sharon cannot buy.

100 years ago

Palladium, one of the rare metals belonging to the platinum group and occurring almost invariably associated with platinum or other metals of this group, was discovered in 1803 by Wollaston and named for the planetoid Pallas, in honor of its discoverer, Olbers. A deposit of ore containing palladium in considerable quantity has been discovered on the Boss Gold Mining property ten miles east of Good Springs.

Cached away in the Nevada state treasury is a sizable array of funds, in many instances appropriated by legislatures meeting during World War I, which never have been used but which never have reverted to the general fund.

Carson City will have to wait for some time before the proposed Catholic school becomes a reality. Msgr. H.J.M. Wienties today said three acres of land had been purchased at the end of Fifth St. beyond Sierra Heights subdivision. At present, there is only $5,000 in the building fund.

50 years ago

Every resident and taxpayer in Nevada has a stake in the operations of the alcoholic beverage industry in the state. This was made clear today in an economic study prepared and distributed by Licensed Beverage Industries, Inc. The industry contributed $32,416,173 to the state’s economy in 1963.
