The Carson City Sheriff’s Office is warning residents of a man posing as a lieutenant who is telling them that they will go to jail unless they pay for traffic tickets that they have received.
Sheriff Ken Furlong said the man contacted numerous residents today. He reportedly says they need to pay via a money order to avoid arrest. If you receive such a message, hang up, according to Furlong.
The man is calling residents and identifying himself as “Lt. Steven Mills or Neils” with the Carson City Sheriff’s Office or the Ormsby County Sheriff’s Office, according to Sgt. Scott McDaniel.
He tells individuals that they have bench warrants for their arrest due to speeding tickets that were captured by a traffic camera, McDaniel said in a press release. The sheriff’s office does not use traffic cameras and the sheriff’s office does not make phone calls to individuals to collect money for traffic warrants.
Resident who have received a similar phone call, are asked to report it to Carson City Sheriff’s Office Dispatch at (775) 887-2011.
