140 Years Ago

Chas. Monk, a well-known resident of this state, was standing at the bar of the C. P. Brewery, fell to the floor in a fit and died. The deceased had been subject to spasms for some time. He was an old attaché of the Overland Mail Company and had charge of Friday’s Station on the road from Carson to Lake Tahoe. The deceased was the brother of Hank Monk who is driving the stage from Carson to Glenbrook (Eureka Sentinel).

All sorts: Measles have broken out among the Paiute, but not enough to interfere with draw poker. Dr. E. G. Winnie has opened dental rooms over Learnhart’s drug store. Dr. Winnie is an artistic operator as many people in this city can testify. A few days ago some boys digging at the site of Duffy and Rice’s acid factory found a tin box containing $1,000 in coin and greenbacks.

Hard Times Party: Many people were at the Odd Fellows’ Hall to dance and dine. The music was by Zimmer’s orchestra. The Appeal reporter was there and presents a description of some of the costumes: Bill Kinney wore chin whiskers, an open vest, with a police club and pair of handcuffs. Burt Gee dug up an old suit of clothes he used when he was the time-keeper at the post office and had his whiskers trained to a V point. Lawrence Elrod and Johnny Jones dressed alike and made the hit of the evening in spring bottom pants, brogans, red shirts and faded blue chrysanthemums pinned to the lapel of their coats. Will Dauchy’s mustache was beautifully festooned, and his handkerchief was perfumed with the extract of vanilla ...

State of the state: Gov. Richard Bryan will have favorable news for the state of the state address. Department of Taxation statistics show Nevada’s statewide sales jumping 13.3 percent in November over the same month a year ago.
