Jimmy John’s opens on north side

Jimmy John’s grand opening Thursday on Carson City’s north side was for anyone but naked people.

The opening and ribbon-cutting for the Jimmy John’s Gourmet Sandwiches outlet at 2329 N. Carson St., which is the second such restaurant in the community, attracted local dignitaries fully clothed for the occasion on a brisk winter’s day. As they gathered in the parking lot just south of the outlet, one among them pointed out a small sign directly over the entry door. It reads:

“We’d love to see you naked, but state code requires shoes and shirt.”

Most of the words were in small though discernible type, but “naked” stood out larger and bolder to capture attention.

Ken Yzurdiaga, the owner of the new Jimmy John’s and the other one at 3849 S. Carson St., did the honors in the ribbon-cutting with his spouse, Dana, then accepted congratulations and thanks from Supervisor Brad Bonkowski.

“The city has been awesome,” he told Bonkowski.

Also on hand was a crowd that included leaders of the Carson City Chamber of Commerce: Gil Yanuck, chairman; Stan Jones, immediate past chairman; and Ronni Hannaman, executive director.

Yzurdiaga after the ceremony invited the crowd inside and set out a sampling of Jimmy John’s fare while explaining he now owns two outlets, but may not be done. Asked where the next restaurant would go, he declined to disclose his plans.

He said the two outlets combined have about 40 full-time-equivalent employees, some full time and some part time, with some 25 staffing each store.

The first Carson City Jimmy John’s went into remodeled space last year south of downtown. The space formerly had housed Local’s BBQ. The one that opened officially Thursday was built just north of Hot Springs Road and the Denny’s restaurant on land that was the site of a Godfather’s Pizza place. That structure was razed to accommodate the new building.
