Silver Dollars and Wooden Nickels: We definitely owe ‘The Pied Pfeifer,’ first responders

The Nevada Appeal’s Silver Dollars & Wooden Nickels feature recognizes achievements from the capital region and, when warranted, points out other acts that missed the mark.

SILVER DOLLAR: It was definitely an inspirational story this week to see Chad Pfeifer playing in the American Century Championship at Edgewood-Tahoe Golf Course in Stateline. As we keep saying we definitely owe him and those who serve and have served and sacrificed for this country a huge debt of gratitude. Pfeifer essentially lost his left leg in Iraq, but has gone on to become an accomplished golfer with the goal of one day playing professionally.

SILVER DOLLAR: Staying with the theme of those who serve, another huge debt of gratitude is owed to the first responders and firefighting staff who quickly responded to the Clear Creek Fire above Jacks Valley Road on Wednesday night.

SILVER DOLLAR: We would also like to congratulate the Carson City Little League Intermediate All-Stars who rolled to the state title. Carson is now competing in the Western Regionals being held in Nogales, Ariz.

WOODEN NICKEL: To the state of Nevada for not releasing adequate information on the number of medical marijuana cardholders there are in a local jurisdictions such as Carson City, for whatever reason, as pointed out by Sheriff Kenny Furlong. This isn’t to cast aspersions against medical marijuana cardholders, but the reality is there are those who look to have medical marijuana cards not for legitimate reasons and at least having adequate data on the number of cardholders would certainly help law enforcement. Just ask law enforcement officials throughout California how a lack of information has hurt when it comes to enforcing medical marijuana laws in that state.
