140 years ago

Returned. Hon. Frank Denver, Lieutenant Governor, returned here with his family yesterday morning. Mrs. Denver would have returned some months since, but for a painful illness. They are all in fine plight now.

130 years ago

A horrible death. One day last week a man who lives on the divide between Hopkins Creek and the head of Nelson’s Creek went to Quincy and reported to officers that he had found the remains of a dead man in his cabin. The miner, who leaves the cabin for the winter, had returned to find the remains of a man, unidentifiable, who had perished in the cabin during snow season and then was devoured by rats. A search is on for anything that will identify the man.

100 years ago

Carson Valley Day tomorrow at Minden. Edward Yerington of the Virginia and Truckee Railroad departed for Minden this morning to make final arrangements for the visit of many Carsonites who will leave in the morning to be present and participate in the annual celebration of Carson Valley Day. Fun and frolic will be the program during the day.

70 years ago

Lt. Richard L. Waters, Jr., 29, is one of Nevada’s most decorated flyers of World War II. Waters is returning to the states in the middle of June after 22 months in the South Pacific. Waters holds the distinguished flying cross for piloting a bomber on the first land based bomber attack on Truk; the Purple Heart decoration for wounds received when his Liberator was shot down in one of the first attacks on Wake; and air medal with three oak leaf clusters and three bronze and three silver stars.

Carson City Council unanimously declared sheep on the property located at 817 E. Fifth Street, a nuisance and ordered the sheep to be removed. The owner stated he had been on the property for 67 years and had no problem till apartments were built next to his property. He said the sheep kept weeds from growing and prevented a fire hazard.

Supervisors have approved in concept general policies and goals for the establishment of a redevelopment district in Carson City.
