This column appears in the Nevada Appeal Wednesday health pages. It addresses topics related to the health of our community.

Last Sunday, families across the country honored men who have stepped up to the challenge of parenting by celebrating Father’s Day. Part of being a good dad, or a good man, means staying healthy so you can be there for those who depend on you. That’s why Carson City Health and Human Services is celebrating Men’s Health Month for the entire month of June. The purpose of Men’s Health Month is to highlight men’s health issues, raise awareness of preventable health problems and encourage early detection and treatment of diseases.

When it comes to staying healthy, there are some things you can do for yourself — be sure you’re staying active, eating right, and getting enough sleep. Taking these steps to look after yourself can help reduce your risk for chronic health conditions and ensure that you’re on your “A” game. There are some things, though, you need a healthcare professional for — screening for conditions like high blood pressure, cholesterol, and certain types of cancer; and vaccinations for diseases like the flu, hepatitis, and whooping cough (that last one is really important if you’re around babies).

Carson City Health and Human Services wants to do everything we can to help you stay healthy. That’s why Monday evenings from 4-6 p.m., our clinic is dedicated exclusively to men’s health. After-work hours are set aside to make attending as hassle-free as possible. As a patient, you can expect excellent care from trained medical professionals and up-to-date information on current health tips to keep your body in the best possible condition.

Our staff wants you to feel comfortable during your appointment. We offer STD testing and confidential partner notification, brief medical counseling, and if necessary, referrals to other healthcare providers to meet your needs.

Not sure if you’re ready for fatherhood?

Not to worry. We provide family planning services, which include medical counseling, referrals, and safe-sex kits. We’re here to answer your questions and provide everything you need to help you feel comfortable about your choice for now and for the future. To make an appointment, call the clinic at 775-887-2195.
