140 years ago

A man named James Gilligan, employed at the Merrimac Mill on the Carson River, was killed instantly this forenoon by being run over by the cars. The locomotive Columbus, train No. 10, was pushing some cars loaded with ore up a side track when the unfortunate man fell under the cars. Dr. Davidson was summoned, but the unfortunate man was dead before he got there.

At the depot yesterday, while the train was stopping, several ladies were gazing intently at the car which the “Jersey Lily” occupied, wishing to catch a glimpse of the fair lady. Presently the maid, attendant on her highness, closed a curtain of a windows and exposed an arm, at which one of the ladies exclaimed in a rapturous tone: “What a beautiful arm the Lily has.” — Silver State.

General Villa will leave Torreon today for the front above Zacatecas, it was announced this morning. Thus will begin the peculiar arrangement between him and General Carranza, which will allow Villa full command of the zone which he dominates.

The Navy announced the loss of the 1,475-ton submarine Grayback, presumably in the Pacific where the American undersea boats are taking a high toll on Japanese shipping.

Mrs. Ann Cameron of Carson City has graduated from the Famous Artist Schools of Westport, Conn. Mrs. Cameron specializes in commercial art and illustration.

The Pony Express Mail will again arrive at Carson City on Saturday when more than 400 riders participate in the 10-day ride. Nevada riders include: Bill Arant, Bryon Clark, Neil Mehringer, Noel Manoukian, Walt Crammer and Jim Swindle.
