Bagwell files to run for Board of Supervisors

Lori Bagwell filed Monday as a candidate for the Carson City Board of Supervisors from Ward 3, saying her primary goal is city government accountability.

Bagwell, formerly with state government, owns the Charley’s Grilled Subs outlet in Carson Mall and has been active in city business-redevelopment matters.

“I want to hold staff a little more accountable,” she said, adding that more and better documentation leading to board decision-making should be available on the public record.

“For me, one of the most important issues is that I would like to restore trust in the Board of Supervisors,” she said. Bagwell, who has served on and headed the city’s Redevelopment Authority Citizens Committee, said the community has been divided and that accountability would help end that. “That, for me, is the crux of it.”

She filed about mid-afternoon at the clerk-recorder’s office for the seat currently held by John McKenna, who has said he intends to seek another term.

Bagwell last year announced her intent to run. She did so in November on the birthday of her late grandmother, Californian Mary Horsell, whom she called an inspiration. Just an hour before filing, Bagwell cited a quote from Horsell that helped inspire her interest in public service:

“You have to work hard in the community to make it a better place for your children.”

Two supervisors’ seats on the five-member board are up for election this year, the one in Ward 3 and the other in Ward 1 that is held by Supervisor Karen Abowd. Abowd announced recently she will seek another term, and no one has disclosed an intent to challenge her.
