Perennial Independent American candidate and south Douglas County activist Sam H. Dupuis was killed Monday afternoon when his pickup was struck broadside by a livestock truck.

Dupuis, 87, pulled out from Kyle Drive onto Highway 208 in the path of a blue 2013 Peterbilt tractor pulling a livestock semi-trailer transporting 10 black bulls, according to the Nevada Highway Patrol.

The crash occurred about 12:50 p.m., 4 miles east of Holbrook Junction.

Dupuis’ 1992 Mitsubishi pickup was crushed, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. Also killed was his dog, which was riding in the cab, according to Trooper Chuck Allen.

Big rig driver William C. Whiteaker, 51, of Newman, Calif., was not injured.

Dupuis was a longtime Douglas County resident and last ran for public administrator in 2010.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Kay, who died April 21, 2005. The couple had been married 28 years.
