Prison composer: A convict at the state prison, Jules M. Lazand, has composed a Mazurka for the piano. He has dedicated it to Mrs. Dorsey, the lady who leads with the organ when the Episcopal choir sings for the prisoners. Mr. Lazard was sent from Winnemucca for stealing watches. He joins the musical exercise playing the violin with great skill and writes music that looks like print. He speaks several languages and is without doubt the most educated man in prison — and maybe the state.

The strong man: Sandow, strongest man in the world, passed through Reno. One of the opinions is that a man of such great strength must be large, but he is a man who would not attract more than a passing notice. He had several dumbbells with him that required the full strength of some of Reno’s heavy-weights to lift (Journal).
