Escape: Jim Myers, the carrier of the Gold Hill Chronicle, was riding a spirited mare and was through serving his subscribers when the Empire locomotive came down the grade. Jim reined up on an embankment five or six feet high to throw a copy of the paper to Miner, the engineer. The mare commenced bucking violently, sprang high into the air and landed over the embankment onto the track with Jim underneath. The train was just a few feet ahead.
