TEACHERS AWARDED

Congratulations to Maria Schofield for being named Carson High School’s Teacher of the Month for March. MaryAnne Weaver was named Certified Employee of the Year and Jennifer Palmer is Classified Employee of the Year Carson High School. It is a pleasure to work alongside all of these ladies.

CHS CULINARY

CHS Culinary Arts is hosting a fundraiser at Silver Oak Golf & Event Center on April 9. A four-course dinner will be served with a silent auction to take place during the evening.

All proceed go directly to the students who recently won the Nevada culinary competition and are headed to the national competition in Minnesota. Tickets are $35 each, and there are only 40 tickets left.

LINK CREW APPLICATIONS

Link Crew is a high school transition program for freshmen. Built on the belief that students can help other students succeed, the Link Crew program trains mentors from the junior and senior classes to be Link Crew Leaders. As positive role models, Link Crew Leaders guide freshmen to discover what it takes to be successful during the transition to high school.

Link Crew provides the structure for freshmen to receive support and guidance from juniors and seniors who have been through the challenges that high school poses, and understand that the transition to a larger school can sometimes be overwhelming.

Does this sound like a program you would be interested in? See Mrs. Walls in room 223 to pick up a CHS Link Crew applications for the 2014-2015 school year. Only current sophomores and juniors may apply.

SPEECH & DEBATE NEWS

Carson High Speech and Debate is in the middle of a very busy month. The team competed in the last regular season tournament at Elko High School last weekend.

Bailee Barber and Jazmyn Conde placed sixth in novice duo interpretation for their cutting of “Girl, Interrupted” by Susanna Kaysen looking at mental illness among teen girls. Sawyer Barnett and Shaylin Segura placed fourth in novice duo for their cutting of the Calvin and Hobbes piece “Yukon Ho!” by Bill Waterson.

Jacob Bertocchi and Luke Szatmary placed third overall in Senior Public Forum debating the Supreme Court’s recent decision on section four of the Voting Rights Act.

Porfirio Jauregi will be representing Carson City next weekend at the district level of the Lions Speaker Contest in Dayton. Bailee Barber, Jazmyn Conde, Rebecca Matley and Shaylin Segura will be traveling to Vegas to compete at the state competition.

Carson High debaters also competed at the Club Rotary Speaking Contests for the Carson and Sunset clubs. Rebecca Matley and Jacob Bertocchi placed first and Emily Spence and Shaylin Segura placed second. Rebecca and Jacob will represent Carson at the area competition in April at Montbleu Tahoe. Last but not least, Carson High is hosting the district tournament March 27-29. This is the single most important tournament of the season with winners qualifying to compete at the national tournament in June.

We need community support to hold this tournament, and everyone is invited to participate as a judge. Judging is rewarding and fun. Grandma Hatties is catering the event and judges eat for free. Anyone interested can contact Patrick Mobley for more information at pmobley@carson.k12.nv.us

COUNSELOR NEWS

Attention Juniors: Are you interested in leadership and government? Boys and Girls State offers a unique, weeklong summertime educational program focusing on participation and personal experience in a model state, complete with governmental bodies and elected public officials. Boys State will be held at UNR and Girls State at Lake Tahoe. See Mr. McCarthy in the Guidance Office for information on these exciting opportunities.

Attention 8th graders: Carson High School will be hosting an information night for incoming freshmen and their parents on March 31 for Eagle Valley Middle School, Bethlehem Lutheran and St. Teresa. Carson Middle School will be April 2. Both evenings will begin at 6 p.m. in the Carson High School library. Please plan to join the Carson High School counselors to learn more about the high school and have any questions answered.

PROM WINNER

Congrats to senior Fiona McElhany for winning the Greater Nevada Credit Union prom contest.

SENIOR-SENIOR PROM

Attention Community members. Do you remember your high school prom? Do you want to relive those memories or better yet make new ones?

If so, come on down to Senior-Senior prom at Carson High School 6-9 p.m. May 2. There will be line dancing and lots of fun. The theme is The Great Gatsby. Come on down and have the best prom of your life.

SENIOR SPOTLIGHT

The Senior Spotlight shines on Elizabeth Flansberg this week.

Elizabeth has a 4.78 weighted grade-point average, with straight As in her rigorous course load, which is filled with honors and advanced-placement courses.

Elizabeth plays tennis, is a member of FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America) and is vice-president of the Carson High School National Honor Society.

She is a member of AP We the People Government class, which recently competed for the first time at the state competition.

Elizabeth keeps herself busy outside of school playing the piano as well as teaching piano lessons. Elizabeth plans to attend Brigham Young University where she will study either accounting or engineering.

Carson High School is proud of Elizabeth’s achievements in school and the community, and we wish her success and happiness in the future.
