Attending Sunday service at St. Teresa of Avila church in Carson City last weekend offered more than the traditional celebration. It included a presentation on how to succeed in college.
Western Nevada College Assistant to the Dean/Latino Outreach Coordinator Lupe Ramirez, along with WNC Dean of Student Services John Kinkella, met with about 60 high school sophomores and juniors to talk about their futures.
The presentation included information about WNC’s Jump Start College, which allows high-achieving high school students to take college classes prior to graduation; the Bridge to Success college readiness program that assists with the registration process; and the Latino Cohort, which offers students a support system of peer and faculty mentors as they move through their college journey.
“This is the perfect time to introduce these programs to the students to increase awareness of the opportunities they have at Carson High School during their senior year,” said Ramirez.
“St. Teresa’s director of Youth Ministry, Joe Koreski, was very supportive in allowing us to present to this group of students,” she said. “The students were very engaged and interested in learning more about the programs. The college values the partnership and collaboration with Father Chuck, the pastor of St. Teresa, and his staff.”
Ramirez said the partnership is important also for reaching out to Latino parents to stress the importance of higher education for their children.
“It is imperative that we also promote the programs available to adults, including free English Language Learning classes for non-English speakers,” she said.
