Discussion about breast cancer is May 20

Lecture about Mark Twain in Tahoe is set

David C. Antonucci — author, historian and regional expert on Lake Tahoe, Mark Twain, and the Olympic Games at Lake Tahoe — will talk about “Fairest Picture: Mark Twain at Lake Tahoe,” the only book devoted solely to chronicling Mark Twain’s experiences in the Lake Tahoe region, at Leisure Hour Club’s dinner meeting at 6:30 p.m. May 21 at Carson Nugget.

Antonucci’s served seven years as chief of regulation and enforcement for a water quality control board and 20 years as general manager and chief engineer of a multifunction special district in the Lake Tahoe area. His civic involvement includes Tahoe Resource Conservation District, Association of California Water Agencies, Tahoe Sierra State Parks Foundation, Squaw Valley Olympic Museum and the Kiwanis Club of North Lake Tahoe.

Navy League hosts Capt. Steinbaugh

U.S. Navy Capt. Leif E. Steinbaugh, commanding officer of Naval Air Station Fallon, will talk at Carson City Council of the U.S. Navy League’s bi-monthly meeting on May 21 in Casino Fandango’s Banquet Room. Social hour starts at 5:30 p.m., dinner hour at 6:15 p.m.

Event offers information for seniors

Silver Sage at Neil Road Apartments will hold a free “Carnival of Information” for seniors from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 22 at 3870 Neil Road in Reno.

The event offers up-to-date information about resources and services available to seniors. Alliance Home Health Services will provide free blood pressure checks. Reno Fire Department and Reno Police Department will be on hand to talk about fire and fraud prevention. Awake and Aging will present “Control Your Mind Before it Controls You,” and representatives from Raley’s pharmacy will talk about available prescription and grocery delivery services.

USDA offers grants for energy projects

The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced up to $12.3 million in grants and $57.8 million in loan guarantees are available for rural small businesses and agricultural producers that want to fund energy efficiency improvements or install renewable energy systems.

Eligible projects include the installation of renewable energy systems such as solar, wind turbines, geothermal, biomass, anaerobic digesters, hydroelectric or hydrogen systems. Funding may also be used to purchase energy-efficient equipment, add insulation, and improve heating and cooling systems. The grant can cover up to 25 percent of total project costs.

The deadline to apply is July 7. Guaranteed loan applications are accepted on a continuous basis; for the current cycle, they will be accepted up to July 31. Applications can be submitted online at Grants.gov, or turned in by 4:30 p.m. on the due date to USDA Rural Development, 1390 S. Curry St.

BLM sets maintenance on fuel breaks

The Bureau of Land Management’s Carson City District will conduct maintenance treatment on previously constructed fuel breaks on BLM administered lands along the Sierra Front. Treatment operations will be completed during daylight hours seven days a week, excluding holidays, in late May and June.

Treatment areas include: Mound House in Lyon County; North Carson, Prison Hill, Deer Run/Mexican Dam and Brunswick in Carson City; the west side of Petersen Mountain in Lassen County; Silver Knolls, Lemmon Valley, Hungry Valley, and New Washoe in Washoe County.

Treatment involves mechanical mowing to reduce potential fire intensity. Large shrubs in the treatment area not mowed in the original treatments will not be mowed during the re-treatment and the outside edges of the treatment area will remain irregularly shaped.

The Nevada Department of Veterans Services Veterans Outreach “ROVER” program will visit the Carson City Senior Center from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 29 so veterans and their families can learn about available benefits and services.

Veterans are asked to bring a copy of their DD-214 discharge documents, current VA paperwork and medical and banking account information. If claims involve dependants, veterans are advised to bring birth certificates, current and prior marriage certificates, divorce decrees and Social Security numbers. Carson author holds book signing May 30

Carson City resident Glade A. Myler will hold a book signing event from noon to 2 p.m. May 30 at Comma Coffee, 312 S. Carson St.

Myler is the author of “Through the Eye of the Needle,” which includes poems in both English and Spanish and explores themes of love, music, art, sports, self discovery and human emotion. It was published by Trafford Publishing.

Myler graduated from Utah State University in 1971 with a bachelor’s degree in Spanish and minors in English, German and music. He earned a Juris Doctor from Brigham Young University in 1981 and worked as an attorney for more than 30 years. His book is available at Amazon and Barnes & Noble.

Traveling WWII tour visits Minden June 2-4

The Wings of Freedom tour — which honors World War II veterans and includes the Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress “Nine-O-Nine,” Consolidated B-24 Liberator “Witchcraft,” and P-51 Mustang fighter — will arrive at Minden-Tahoe Airport at noon on June 2 and will be displayed until noon on June 4. Ground tours and display hours will be held from noon to 5 p.m. on Monday, June 2; from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Tuesday, June 3; and from 9 a.m. through noon on Wednesday, June 4.

Visitors are invited to explore the aircraft inside and out. World War II veterans can tour the aircraft at no cost. Up-close viewings and tours cost $12 for adults and $6 for children under 12. Discounted rates for school groups are offered.

Thirty-minute flights on the B-24 cost $400. Flights on the B-17 and B-24 cost $450 per person, and flights on the P-51 cost $2,200 for a half hour and $3,200 for a full hour. For reservations and information on flights, call 800-568-8924.

Fast-pitch softball clinic set for June 14

Craig McEwan will present an indoor fast-pitch softball pitching clinic on June 14 at Talents Athletic Center. A clinic for beginner and intermediate levels will be from 8 to 10 a.m., a session for advanced levels follows from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Players younger than 18 years must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Participants are asked to wear tennis shoes, dress comfortably and bring a glove and cleats without metal.
