Silver Dollars and Wooden Nickels: Thanks to Olsons, Carson now a mad, mad world

The Nevada Appeal’s Silver Dollars & Wooden Nickels feature recognizes achievements from the capital region and, when warranted, points out other acts that missed the mark.

SILVER DOLLAR: It’s Carson City’s version of the 1963 classic comedy, “It’s A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World,” and we have Laurie Olson and her family to thank for that as they have again organized the 13th annual Nevada Day Treasure Hunt, which starts Monday. The significance of this year’s treasure hunt is obvious since we’ll be celebrating the state’s sesquicentennial on Nevada Day. Clues for finding the Nevada Day Treasure Chest medallion can be found daily in the Nevada Appeal and at www.nevadaappeal.com.

SILVER DOLLAR: To the Carson Animal Services Initiative for putting on the Pooch Plunge at the Carson Aquatic Facility. And to all the dogs who looked like they were having a blast in the water at the event.

SILVER DOLLAR: To all those honored at the Dayton Chamber of Commerce community awards event. Those recognized were honored for their service to their community and their efforts to enhance the quality of life in Dayton.

SILVER DOLLAR: To Tribe Elder Melba Rakow and Lisa Enos for developing four children’s books in the native Washoe language, so an important heritage can be maintained and remembered.

SILVER DOLLAR: To Carson High biology students for applying what they learn in their efforts to help restore areas damaged by the 2004 Waterfall Fire.

WOODEN NICKEL: Periodically, we’ll give a wooden nickel to so-called reality stars, who basically have become famous for pretty much doing nothing. This week’s wooden nickel goes to “The Situation” of “Jersey Shore,” who faces tax fraud charges for unpaid taxes on income up to $8.9 million.
