Kyle Kunz, 17, has served on different assembly committees since he was a freshman, working behind the scenes to make them fun. But on Tuesday, he was front and center as one of the Homecoming King candidates announced during the assembly at Carson High School.
“It’s a really good feeling to know you peers appreciate the stuff you do for the school,” he said. “It’s a great feeling that’s it’s finally happening to me.”
Candidates are selected by the student body and the winner will be announced during halftime of Friday’s Homecoming football game.
“I think it’s kind of fun people decided to pick me as a candidate,” said Jared Hearn, 18. “I didn’t expect it at all.”
Bailie Zuber, 18, said the crown isn’t the ultimate goal.
“It’s so exciting,” she said. “Even if you don’t win, it’s just fun to be involved.”
During Homecoming week, each day will have a dress-up theme, along with activities over the lunch break and in the evenings. A parade, open to the public and featuring athletes and clubs at the high school will be at 6 p.m. Friday down Saliman Road in front of the high school.
Sarah Christl, 17, said it’s an especially enjoyable time because the candidates are all friends. And they have an even greater prize at stake: class valedictorian.
“It’s going to be (queen candidate) Jessica (Basa),” Christl said.
“No, it’s Sarah,” Basa retorted.
