FISH’s 15th trick-or-treat food drive kicks off in Carson City schools

Friends in Service Helping is kicking off its 15th Annual Trick-or-Treat for FISH food drive Wednesday.

Carson City schools participate in a contest for the students to collect non-perishable food to replenish the inventory at the FISH food bank. The schools and classrooms that collect the most food win prizes and trophies.

The food drive, sponsored by First Christian Church, Galaxy Theatre, Grocery Outlet, HobbyTown USA, Model Dairy, and Parent Teacher Aids, runs until Nov. 3, in time to boost the nonprofit’s inventory for the holidays.

FISH has received record numbers of both returning and new clients this year, including more than 120 new families each month. The organization expects the demand for food items in the coming months to be high. Currently, the food bank shelves are nearly empty.

The drive collects any non-perishable food, but protein foods such as chili and beans, hearty soups and canned vegetables are especially needed.

Participating schools are Bethlehem Lutheran School, Bordewich-Bray Elementary School, Carson Middle School, Eagle Valley Middle School, Empire Elementary School, Fremont Elementary School, Fritsch Elementary School, Mark Twain Elementary School, Seeliger Elementary School, Sierra Lutheran High School, Silver State Charter School, and St. Teresa of Avila Catholic School.

Food donations are accepted at any of the participating schools. To donate directly to the FISH food bank, bring food items to 138 E. Long St.
