Pitched battle in Chinatown (continued from Wednesday). The difficulty had the usual origin — a woman. The woman in this case was of questionable character, or rather whose character there can be no question. It seemed that this class of woman are assessed 25 cents a week for special police protection, which is reluctantly paid with much caterwauling by the painted daughters of the Flowery country. A strange adventure of a Carson farmer. A few evenings since a farmer who resides along the road to Genoa heard a strange noise in the air about midnight, and going out saw by the faint light in the heavens what he took to be a huge bird hovering above his ranch. As he watched, it gave forth a buzzing note of defiance. At that note he returned with a trusty fowling piece, which was the family standby against marauders. After the ammunition was exhausted, they had nothing left but profanity. Having tired of that they went to bed. In the morning the evil omen was still there. It turned out to be a Chinese kite — with wings — that bobs and hums from a musical cross piece that when blown by the wind, sounds like Chopin’s Nocturnes in D Minor.

100 years ago

Reports have been received here that Aurora had received orders to shut down, the failure of the ore to come up to former estimates as reason for the closure. It was only a short time ago that the big 100-stamp mill was said to be running successfully. About 200 men will be affected by the shut down.

70 years ago

A rodeo, sponsored by John Vance, Jack Dietrich and Len Hancock, will be staged at the Carson Hot Springs on Admission Day, Oct. 31. The event will feature bronc riding, wild cow milking, musical chairs, calf and team roping.

60 years ago

A proposed building code for Ormsby County has been drafted and copies are on file in Geraldine Lamb’s office for those interested. The new code will apply to all county area outside Carson City.
