In an era when it seems adults are doing everything for kids, Carson City’s Eddie Tierney reminded us of our youth when we used to take the initiative to go to the sandlot on our own.
Tierney, a Carson City Little League all-star this past summer, took the initiative for something much more ambitious than a sandlot baseball game on a summer day. He thought it would be a cool idea for the Mountain Ridge Little League All-Star team to participate in Carson City’s Nevada Day Parade on Nov. 1 as part of the state’s sesquicentennial.
Mountain Ridge made the entire state proud by not only becoming the first Nevada team to qualify for the Little League World Series, but to advance to the U.S. Championship Game in the process.
Tierney seems to be wise beyond his years because he did what many adults do in his effort to bring Mountain Ridge to Carson City. He went straight to the top. He wrote a letter to Gov. Brian Sandoval, stating the idea to bring Mountain Ridge to the state capital. “They were my heroes,” Tierney wrote in his letter.
But in a gesture of good sportsmanship, if you will, Tierney wasn’t demanding. “I understand if you cannot, but I will really appreciate it if you can try,” Tierney wrote to Sandoval about the effort to bring Mountain Ridge to Northern Nevada.
Along with Gov. Sandoval, Tierney also took the initiative to present his letter to Lt. Gov. Brian Krolicki and Carson City Mayor Bob Crowell in person.
“When I read that, it made me very proud of that young man,” said Crowell about the letter. “It’s a big deal to deliver it to the governor, to the mayor and the Board of Supervisors.
“I think it is extremely important that our young people know of their ability to talk with their elected leaders. This shows he is aware of that. I’m sure that he’ll go far in this life.”
Unfortunately Mountain Ridge apparently won’t be able to make the trip next weekend. Let’s hope somehow, Mountain Ridge can work it out to be here.
“I’m am so proud of my grandson,” Tierney’s grandmother, Carol “Chooch” Tierney wrote.
So here’s a tip of the cap to Eddie Tierney.
