A new career-exploration program for middle-school students at Dilworth STEM Academy in Sparks is looking for businesses and professionals to host students for one-hour visits.
Principal Laura Petersen says the school is hoping to draw interest from a wide variety of businesses and professional offices where students can visit for an hour as the completion of the program called “Step It Up.”
Visits would be in early November.
Students will begin by a visit to the high school Signature Academy that they’ve selected based on their personal interests — Reed High School’s medical program, for instance, or the Red House graphics arts program at Reno High.
Then they will visit the University of Nevada, Reno, Truckee Meadows Community College or the Career College program that offers the education and training specific to their career choice to learn more about the educational requirements.
The visit to businesses would be the captsone of the career-education program.
Students will be watching adults at work in the careers that they have explored.
