The Germans used potato bugs as a forerunner of the secret weapon flying bombs. The German planes dropped Colorado beetles in an effort to damage the 7 million ton British potato crops.

Ormsby County pioneers were honored at a tree planting ceremony on the grounds of the State Printing Office directly east of the Capitol. Ed Peterson represented Ormsby pioneers. He was born April 29, 1874, and was an employee of the Virginia-Truckee Railroad. His wife attended the tree planting with him and is an Ormsby native. She was born on a ranch, which was located where the State Prison now stands. John D. Winters, chairman of the Nevada Centennial Early Nevada Families Committee, acted as master of ceremonies.
