Nevada Legislature: Bills to ax Common Core, claim federal land unlikely to pass

Republican leaders say some bills advancing conservative priorities are not expected to live past a legislative deadline this week.

Assembly Majority Leader Paul Anderson said Tuesday that bills to repeal Common Core education standards and the Silver State Health Insurance Exchange are not likely to pass out of their committees by Friday.

He said a bill supported by rancher Cliven Bundy that seeks to claim federal lands within Nevada borders for the state is not expected to get a vote, even though it’s scheduled for discussion on Thursday. The state’s Legislative Counsel Bureau has said the proposal is unconstitutional.

Bills must pass their first committee by Friday to proceed through the legislative session, which is about halfway through. Proposals could still be resurrected as amendments to other bills.
