140 years ago

Mad cow. About five days ago, a cow got into the enclosure in front of the Warm Springs Hotel, and in attempting to cross the deep ditch there, fell in. She was discovered, and the men about the hotel procured ropes and placed them around her horns and puller her out. When the hosteler pulled the rope away, the cow made a dash at him. By good running and dodging, the hosteler made his escape amid the jeers and laughter of those who had secured safe places for themselves.

Turning the Carson River. It is reported that a company is being organized to turn the Carson River, near the Santiago mill, to clean out the bed of the stream and capture tons of quicksilver and amalgam there. “There’s millions in it,” without a doubt.

100 years ago

New commission organizing. The new State Tax Commission has been holding a meeting this afternoon at the Capitol, but at the hour of going to press, no report of deliberations has been received.

70 years ago

At the business meeting of the Rotary Club held at noon today, Bob Gwinn of the state highway department spoke on mapping and aerial photography.

60 years ago

A third mysterious fireball flashed across New Mexico and plunged to earth in the state’s southeast corner today. A leading scientist said chances the objects were meteorites were very small.

50 years ago

The biggest winners in the recently completed session of the state Legislature probably were Nevada’s 8,000 Indians. With four key issues involving them, the state’s scattered bands, reservations and colonies walked away victors in every case.
