Some black clouds over the Sierra threatened a touch of weather last evening. We understand from Old Probabilities (that’s the name that Charley Friend lays himself liable to), that the barometer is rather sluggish than otherwise and not loudly indicative of a storm.

130 years ago

The Nevada liars. “Of all the liars on the face of the earth, we believe the Nevada newspaper liar is the most prodigious outside of Missouri,” says the St. Louis Democrat, “and the newspaper men in that State all seem to be equally accomplished. One of them will publish a wild, imaginative yarn and every other paper in the State will reprint it.” About a year ago one of these sensation originators related how a wonderful “illuminating shrub” had been discovered. Another reported of a bottomless cavern in Lake Tahoe.

100 years ago

The Barnes circus arrived on time yesterday afternoon and its unloaded of animals and paraphernalia was viewed with interest by hundreds of Carson residents. Later the crowd followed the outfit to the Valley park and watched the raising of the tents and feeding of the animals.

70 years ago

All establishments in Carson City which serve beer, ale, wine or hard liquors will be visited during the period of May 1 to 15 by volunteers or board clerks to conduct a malt and alcoholic beverages posting survey, A. Berning, Jr., chairman of the local war price and rationing board, said today.
