150 years ago

Shooting affray occurred yesterday at about half past five in front of the store of Mitchell & Adams on south C Street between a man called “Big Jake” and Frank Farrington, during which some eight shots were fired. It seems “Big Jake” came into Spaulding’s saloon, somewhat intoxicated and began insulting Farrington. A slap started a fight, which ended in the street. Farrington is in jail and “Big Jake” has wounds, which are unknown. — Virginia Union.

An attraction in Carson is that the lecture of Mrs. E.J. M.Cooley Monday and Tuesday. The temperance people have been at considerable trouble securing the services of this lecturer, but will consider themselves amply repaid if a good audience will assemble.

100 years ago

The convicts down at the prison have invented a new game at which to try their luck. Being deprived of roulette wheels, dice, cards, faro layouts, and all other regular means of tempting fortune, they have made up a way to bet their copper money. Since the tourist season began, many come to the prison to see the tracks, and each auto carries an official number. A pool is made, a set of numbers appears from the cars, and then the taking of money.

70 years ago

Clocks will go back an hour to standard time soon after Congress reconvenes next month. President Truman indicated as much that statutory war time is no longer needed.
