A 64-year-old Gardnerville woman was killed in the traffic collision at Mottsville Lane and Highway 88 on Friday night.
Janis Hill was identified as the driver of a blue BMW who died as a result of the crash reported by the Nevada Highway Patrol at 6:28 p.m. Friday.
According to the Nevada Highway Patrol, Hill’s vehicle entered the intersection the same time as a red Ford Taurus driven south on Highway 88 by Carson City resident Holly Ducoing, 22.
The front of the Taurus hit the left side of the BMW in the intersection. The wreck drove both vehicles into a northbound Honda SUV that was stopped at the intersection.
Ducoing was taken for medical treatment.
The traffic light had been disabled by an earlier wreck.
Both the Nevada Department of Transportation and Douglas County were notified that it was out.
“The intersection was controlled at all four directions of travel by temporary stop signs,” he said.
The cause of the crash is still under investigation, Dauber said.
According to the county, there was a reader board alerting motorists the traffic light wasn’t functioning on Friday before the fatal accident.
Workers from the Nevada Department of Transportation and a private contractor were working on the light.
The traffic signal at 88 and Mottsville was installed in 2005.
This is the eighth fatal collision to be reported in Douglas County during 2015, and at least the second on Highway 88.
