The Nevada Appeal’s Silver Dollars & Wooden Nickels feature recognizes achievements from the capital region and, when warranted, points out other acts that missed the mark.

SILVER DOLLAR: To the Carson City Chamber of Commerce and the others who helped organize and participate in the Silver Snowflakes Festival of Lights held Friday. Many communities hold Christmas Tree lightings, but we challenge anyone to find a Christmas Tree Lighting — which isn’t just a Christmas Tree Lighting — as extensive and supported as the one we hold here in Carson City.

SILVER DOLLAR: To all those involved in the fifth annual Feds Feed Families food drive in Carson City with collected 3,067 pounds of food.

SILVER DOLLAR: To the Carson Nugget and to all those who contributed to the Carson Nugget’s annual tradition of providing a free Thanksgiving dinner for the community.

SILVER DOLLAR: To Sierra Lutheran High graduate Nathanael Williams for helping Colorado School of Mines win its first ever national title in any sport when Williams and the men’s cross country team won the NCAA Division II national title. Williams also ran a personal best to finish 21st to gain All-American status.

SILVER DOLLAR: Monday will be the 74th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor. It’s especially poignant to Nevadans because of the heroism of those on the USS Nevada through the rest of World War II after surviving the attack. We remember the survivors and those who lost their lives on Dec. 7, 1941, and all those past and present who have been in the military, including those who have sacrificed their lives.
