A Nevada state prison inmate who was convicted of robbing his 82-year-old mother in Douglas County six years ago has died less than a week before he was scheduled to be considered for parole.

Department of Corrections officials confirmed 64-year-old Gregory Kovner died Saturday at Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center in Reno.

An autopsy is planned to determine the cause of death.

Kovner was serving up to 14 years after pleading guilty in December 2009 to robbing an elderly person.

His mother told police that Kovner punched her in the face and threatened to kill her after he tied her to a chair with rope and telephone cord at her home in Topaz Ranch Estates.

Kovner became eligible for parole nearly two years ago and was scheduled to appear before the parole board again on Thursday.
