The Warren’s fire bell. We understand the Warren Engine Company is about to remove its fire tower and bell from in front of the building on the other side of the alley from our office to its new office. We shall be grievously bereaved and shall refuse to be comforted when that sweetly toned instrument of alarm is so far removed from our immediate hearing that its melodious voice can no longer soothe our disquieted nerves as we write.

130 years ago

(Correco’s pig; continued from Friday). After amusing himself for about an hour with the crowd he sauntered through the fence, and allied forces, delighted with their victory, went home to change their clothes. While they were home telling their respective families how they bested the blasted pig, the thoughtless and reckless creature slid into the stable again and ate up every last grain of the barley and went through the hole in the fence, grunting, “Marching Through Georgia,” as he went.

Members of the Carson Ski Club held an initial meeting last Friday to discuss a proposed lift for the ski hill at Spooner. Meeting Friday were Bob Shriver, Bud Miller, Jess Maxsom, Mr. and Mrs. Buck Eldridge, Alice Boardman, Bruce Smiley, Ednamae Hunt and John Nulty.

50 years ago

Carson City boasts a new newspaper, “Sierra News,” now being distributed in the northeast section of the city. Following are two news stories: “At 1633 Molly Drive Diana Roby caught a goldfish over down over in a gold fish pond. She came home soaking wet trying to catch the gold fish. Golly Gee.” The paper is hand written on tablet paper and the average age of the staff is about eight years.

Gov. Richard Bryan said today that he is optimistic the U.S. Senate will approve a bill requiring additional states to open low-level nuclear waste dumps.
