Northern Nevada Business Weekly: Tell us about your company and the duties of your position?

Rose: Reno Staffing had two partners and wanted to expand its operations, so they changed the name to Nevada Staffing and I was brought in as a partner. My background is working with clients in manufacturing and logistics from Reno, Sparks, Carson City and Gardnerville/Minden. We’re going to focus on helping military veterans find employment. I’m a veteran myself. We’re working with federal and state agencies such as Veterans Resource Centers and the State of Nevada Veterans services representatives. We also work with UNR, TMCC and WNC graduates in the engineering programs.

As general manager, I do business development including marketing, client appointments/sales, recruiting and interviewing of potential candidates. I also do a direct hire program with the lowest placement rate in Nevada (10 percent) Nevada Staffing also has a great staffing coordinator, Tylene Shoup, working with clients to make sure we get it right the first time.

NNBW: How did you get into this profession?

Rose: I decided to move to the Lake Tahoe region back in 1993 and was offered a job in sales for a staffing agency. I was responsible for calling clients to fill job openings.

NNBW: What important thing(s) have you learned in your career?

Any new trends in the industry?

Rose: Things are more efficient with the Internet, software for online testing and social media.

The Northern Nevada job market is changing and improving, with the high tech companies building drones, more aerospace firms manufacturing in our area and a lot more engineering opportunities. We are working with many of those firms.

NNBW: What aspect of your job presents the most challenges?

Rose: There’s huge competition out there. We’re trying to gain advantages, but there’s a lot of people offering different incentives. There’s always a challenge of finding the right people for the right job. But competition is a good thing.

NNBW: What was your first job?

Rose: I was a dishwasher at my father’s restaurant at age 15.

NNBW: What did you dream of becoming as a kid?

Rose: I thought I was going to be a musician, but I didn’t hang with it. Eventually, you start thinking realistically what you want to do for the rest of your life.

NNBW: How do you spend your time away from work?

Rose: We do a lot of hiking and running our dogs. There’s not too many bad-weather days around here. When I have a short vacation, we have a camper and like to visit all the various lakes in the area.

NNBW: Favorite vacation spot?

Rose: St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands. It’s a really beautiful spot.

NNBW: If you could live your life over again, would there be something you would change that impacted your life/career?

Rose: I’ve made tons of mistakes, but I’ve learned to live with them and correct them. I tell my own kids, if a decision doesn’t work out, make another choice.

NNBW: Last concert of sporting event attended?

Rose: Toby Keith in Tahoe and the Beach Boys in Reno. We’ve been to a lot of concerts.

NNBW: If you had enough money to retire now, would you? Why or why not?

Rose: I have enough money, but I don’t think I would retire. My wife tells me: “You can’t retire. You love your job too much and if you were around all the time, you would drive me crazy.” My dad worked until he was 80 because he liked to work and I guess I’m the same way.

NNBW: Why did you choose a career in Northern Nevada? What do you like about living/working here?

Rose: I grew up in Santa Rose, Calif., and I’ve always loved the Sierra Nevada. I don’t think there any places more beautiful.
