The Carson City public schools will be closed next Monday in order that the teachers and pupils may duly celebrate the anniversary of Washington’s birthday. A very commendable idea, indeed.

130 years ago

Dust to dust (continued from Saturday). The military formed about the trenches in a hollow square. Major McDermet’s (sic) remains still remained in the original iron casket and were placed at the head of the west trench. The draped colors of the companies covered the coffins. At the words “Dust to Dust,” the gun of Battery A began its salute, firing 13 shots in all. At the close, the crowd, numbering some 3,000, sang “America,” led by the National Guard Band. An audience which filled Odd Fellows hall to the doors last night listened to a lecture on Christian Science by Mr. Virgil O. Strickler of New York. This was the first public lecture on the subject ever heard in Carson City.

70 years ago

President Lincoln on resentments: “Here I am,” said Mr. Lincoln, “surrounded by documents relating to the vacancy on the Supreme Bench, and I am requested to appoint Mr. Chase. Mr. Chase is a man of ability; as a public officer of marked fidelity; as a politician, ambitious, on the subject of the Presidency, a little insane. He has said things of me which have sent discord where there should be harmony, but a man in my position should not harbor resentment, and I shall appoint him.”

60 Years ago

Budgetary problems of the fire department were discussed between trustees and representatives of Warren Engine Co. at last night’s meeting. Fire Chief Lad Furlong asked to consider retiring the 1915 city fire engine and replacing it with a new one. Furlong also asked for an increase of $60 for the fire budget.
