Authorities say human remains found last summer in the mountains near Lake Tahoe belonged to a former 32-year-old Reno man who apparently shot himself.

Douglas County Undersheriff Paul Howell said Thursday DNA tests confirmed the identity of Ryan Wallace Osburn. He says the former resident of Ocala, Florida listed his occupation as a professional gambler.

An inmate work crew discovered the decomposed remains on June 23, 2014 in a remote wooded area in King Canyon north of U.S. Highway 50 near Spooner Summit.

Investigators also recovered a handgun, bullet and shell nearby.

Howell said in a statement the remains had been subjected to heavy animal predation, which necessitated the DNA analysis and comparison with family members to identify him. He says Osburn died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.
