Dayton Valley Library thankful for support of reading program

The Dayton Valley Library kicked off its summer reading program with a big party on Saturday, June 13. More than 150 adults and children came out to play games, meet community superheroes, enjoy popcorn and hotdogs, and sign up for the summer reading program.

This year’s theme for the summer reading program for all five branches of the Lyon County Library Program is “Superheroes.” Some children came dressed as their favorite superheroes from books, comics, or TV. They were able to meet some of our local heroes like Ron Bell with the Nevada Division of the Pony Express. Ron told about past heroes of Nevada’s history and shared stories of recent re-rides. The kids also got big hugs from Smokey the Bear and talked to Nevada Division of Forestry Rangers from East Lake Station. Lyon County Sheriff’s Volunteer in Policing, Bob Shulman, was there to talk with kids and parents. Becky Boehner shared information from the Lyon County Department of Human Services.

It was a great day of sharing between the Dayton community and local heroes, the library, and local and state resource partners.

Several local businesses and organizations are superheroes for the Dayton Valley Library as they provided financial resources to help make this event a success. Special thanks go out to Cassinelli Landscape and Construction Services and ARMAC Construction, who grilled out hotdogs and served up a nice lunch for free. The Builders Association of Northern Nevada (BANN) provided a grant that paid for many of the prizes that will be given to successful readers who complete the summer reading program.

The Dayton Valley Library also wants to thank Smith’s grocery for prizes and support, and Friends of the Library volunteers who staffed many of the games and provided financial support. Lastly, the Dayton Valley Library wants to thank all the wonderful library patron teenagers who so willingly shared their time for the benefit of other community residents. It was a very positive day and demonstrated the vital role that our library can play in our community.
