SILVER DOLLARS AND WOODEN NICKELS: It’s pop’s day, turn to be honored

The Nevada Appeal’s Silver Dollars & Wooden Nickels feature recognizes achievements from the capital region and, when warranted, points out other acts that missed the mark.

SILVER DOLLAR: Last month we honored mothers on Mothers Day, so obviously it’s dad’s turn on Fathers Day. Here’s a suggestion. (And this can be done for moms, grandparents, friends, siblings, etc., too). Remind your old man about something or some of the things he may not remember, but you remember, he did for you like teaching you how to catch a fly ball or just taking you out for ice cream. And don’t forget the ugly tie.

SILVER DOLLAR: To all the volunteers who made Saturday’s Taste of Downtown possible, in particular, Traci Trenowith of Advocates to End Domestic Violence, who leads the effort to put it all together. Also to all the vendors, businesses and restaurants who participated and to all those attendees who contributed to the cause.

SILVER DOLLAR: To former Western Nevada College student Alice Sady, now a second-year graduate student at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Md., for earning a National Science Federation Graduate Fellowship for Large Hadron Collider research at CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research.

SILVER DOLLAR: Also to the WNC baseball and softball teams who continue to excel in the classroom. Both teams again earned Academic All-American honors for maintaining a cumulative grade point average above 3.0 for the spring semester.

SILVER DOLLAR: The Nevada State Legislators for clearing the way for the to be built $14 million Northern Nevada Veterans Home.
