140 Years Ago

Colorado. A bill admitting Colorado into the union of states was passed by the House of Representatives and will now go to the president. Colorado has been knocking on the doors of Congress for admission for as many as eight years. It was the voice of Sen. Nye that said during the discussion of a bill to admit Colorado that he looked forward to the day when he would march side-by-side with the enfranchised colored man to the ballot box. That prophecy gained the terms of fulfillment when the States of the Union ratified the Fifteenth Amendment (granted African American men the right to vote).

110 Years Ago

Fire. Gardnerville was visited by a fire that threatened to destroy the entire village. It was discovered about 2:30 in the morning and before the citizens could reach the scene, Valhalla Hall and Saloon was a mass of flames. Larson’s saloon was on fire, but the first property to be destroyed was the telephone office. The men and women formed a bucket brigade and did everything in their power to fight the flames. The papers of the town have advocated for a fire fighting organization and new pipe mains to protect the town, but the action has been deferred. Destroyed — Wilder’s store, post office, Dania Hall, Valhalla Hall, Wells Fargo & Co’s Express office, Helberg’s Jewelry Store, telephone office and Rosenbrock & Stodick’s shoe store.

Gas higher. Carson area has gas that is higher than the national average at $1.63 a gallon. Higher gas prices are from increasing costs of crude oil, blamed in turn on oil production limits set by the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).
