St. Teresa of Avila’s 500th birthday today
Today is the 500th birthday of St. Teresa of Avila, whom the Catholic Parish in Carson City is named after. St. Teresa was born on March 28, 1515 near Avila, Spain.
A reformer of her religious order, she was the first female “Doctor (key teacher) of the Church.” She’s revered in Catholic, Episcopal and Lutheran faiths and traditions.
She inspired the Bernini statue and Ruebens’ painting. She still has three books in print and among more than 100 of her well-known quotes, the most famous is, “Christ has no body now but yours, no hands, no feet on Earth but yours. Yours are the eyes through which Christ took compassion into the world. Yours are the feet with which Christ walks to do good. Yours are the hands with which Christ blesses the world.”
Since today is still the season of Lent, The Carson City Parish will celebrate its namesake on her feastday, Oct. 15.
In addition, the schedule for next weekend’s Easter services are as follows: Saturday vigil, 8 p.m. and Sunday services at 7, 9 and 11 a.m. and a Spanish service at 1 p.m. There will be no other Sunday services. St. Teresa’s is located at 3000 North Lompa Lane between College Parkway and Highway 50.
