Bell repairing. The bell in the belfry of St. Peters Episcopal Church is cracked. Some ingenious bell bangers were up there in the belfry sounding for the crack. Having found it, they were going to saw it out and fit in a new crack that wouldn’t make such an outlandish noise ... or if they don’t succeed in the projected repairs, they will get mad and take a sledge hammer and mash the old crack-brained thing into chunks of metal and have ‘em melted up on what they’ll fetch. Then maybe they’ll have a good, strong, highly toned steel bell that’ll weigh a ton, more or less.

Piute [sic] Chief: Naches just received deed to 190 acres of land in Big Meadows below Lovelock. He has been cultivating the land for some years past and raised some good crops of grain on a portion of it. He has received a one-horse wagon and harness and plow.

Lake Tahoe. The Reno Journal can see no reason for the scare in Reno over the Von Schmitt proposition to take Tahoe water for drinking purposes in San Francisco.

Gold mining ban. Just before closing, gold mining shares advanced when it was learned war production officials will revoke the order forbidding gold mining ... Homestake mining ran up two points.

Births at Carson-Tahoe Hospital. Mr. and Mrs. Davis Harjes of Carson City are the parents of a boy weighing eight pounds, four and one half ounces, Sunday, May 9, 1965. Mr. and Mrs. Edward Weninger of Carson City are parents of a boy weighing five pounds 12 3/4 ounces, born at Carson-Tahoe Hospital Sunday, May 9, 1965. (After half a century, they are still residents of Carson City).

Spring fair. A Ferris wheel stands in Mills Park in preparation of the beginning of the Spring Fun Fair. On Sunday, a special treat for mothers will be free rides all day.

Sue Ballew is the daughter of Bill Dolan, who wrote this column for the Nevada Appeal from 1947 until his death in 2006.
