Silver Dollars and Wooden Nickels: A mom’s blood, sweat and tears

The Nevada Appeal’s Silver Dollars & Wooden Nickels feature recognizes achievements from the capital region and, when warranted, points out other acts that missed the mark.

SILVER DOLLAR: Today is Mother’s Day — one day in which moms theoretically take off from the other 364 days in which they give their blood, sweat and tears to raise their children, something they never really stop doing after their children become adults. So the reward for all that is one day in which we hopefully reciprocate all the appreciation and love to our mothers they showed to us. That’s something we should also do the other 364 days of the year.

SILVER DOLLAR: To the 30 graduates of the Peace Officers Standards and Training Program who were honored Wednesday.

SILVER DOLLAR: We can also not forget the 128 peace officers in Nevada who paid the ultimate sacrifice while serving our state honored Thursday in a memorial ceremony at the State Capitol.

SILVER DOLLAR: To the Tahoe Douglas Professional Fire Fighters who raised $3,500 in three hours during a pancake breakfast for Captain Pete Dern, a Fresno firefighter who was critically injured while venting a roof on a two-story house fire on April 19.

SILVER DOLLARS: To Melinda Cash of Mound House, who’s taken it upon herself to make sure some day provide for an estimated hundreds of graves who are missing headstones at Lone Mountain Cemetery.
