Nevada Legislature: NVEnergy, solar fight could be resolved with bill

LAS VEGAS — Nevada senators have passed a bill that aims to resolve a fight between rooftop solar companies and NV Energy.

The Senate voted unanimously on Sunday to pass SB374. The bill now heads to the Assembly.

Advocates for rooftop solar installations have been protesting against a 3 percent state cap on how many solar customers can sell energy back to utility companies. They say the state will reach the cap this year, and the solar industry could come to a standstill.

NV Energy says the sell-back practice, known as net metering, could benefit solar users at the expense of traditional customers.

The bill would allow the Nevada Public Utilities Commission to decide on a tariff to charge solar customers once the cap is reached.
