Carson vs. Douglas: High school teachers to take the court for a good cause

Teachers at Carson and Douglas high schools will be battling it out on the basketball court for a good cause.

The two schools are hosting its first Carson vs. Douglas Staff Basketball Game Nov. 19 at Douglas High School, with all proceeds from the game being donated to the Peace Officer’s Memorial Fund for the families of fallen officers Deputy Carl Howell and Deputy Mark Hounsell.

“We are trying to increase school spirit and the two schools have a big rivalry so we want to show unity between our two communities and bring them together for a good cause,” said event coordinator and Carson High School Leadership Director Ann Britt. “Douglas High School has always been there for Carson High School to help us out when we need it and the other way around. Even though we have a huge rivalry, we are trying to come together.”

Each school has about 20 teachers signed up to participate in the game.

This is the first year this event has been put on, though Britt said coordinators hope to continue it every year. Faculty from both schools coordinated the event at a conference this year as a way to determine how the schools can keep their rivalry strong but incorporate community unity as well.

“We want students to see the two schools with our rivalry but see that we can come together for the community and be positive instead of just negative,” Britt said.

This year, the game is at Douglas High School and coordinators are anticipating switching it to Carson next year. The home school each year will choose the charity to donate the proceeds to.

In addition to the basketball game, Britt said the coordinators are also trying to get the cheerleaders from both schools to perform as well as hosting games for students to participate in during halftime.

The game is Nov. 19 at 6 p.m. at Douglas High School’s big gym. The game is open to the public and tickets are $5 per person and $3 for students with a student ID.
