Laptops for everyone at Carson High

All 2,300 Carson High School students will each receive a laptop during the week of October 5-9 to be used at school and at home to enhance their learning opportunities. Starting on Monday, October 5 at 7:45 a.m. and going throughout the day, all students will go to the library to receive their laptop. This process will be repeated again Tuesday-Thursday.

All third-eighth grade students already have their own laptops, and so by October 9 all third-12th grade students in Carson City School District will each have a laptop as a tool to promote anytime, anywhere access to collaborative and connected learning environments; personalized student learning and differentiated instruction; and as a gateway to enhance college and career readiness.

The driving force behind this student 1:1 laptop project is Carson City School District’s Strategic Plan, “Empower Carson City 2017: Goal 4 Curriculum that Matters: Provide multiple pathways that empower lifelong learners, active citizens, and career and college ready students — Objective 4.1: Increase relevance and rigor through personalized student plan — Strategy 4.1.2: Provide every student with access to current one-to-one mobile technology and access to the Internet as an authentic educational tool.”

FCA NEWS

The students in Carson High School’s chapter of the Federation for Christian Athletes (FCA) are using their influence to show the world they believe in the power of prayer by initiating a time of voluntary prayer before and after their sporting events. These prayer times are student led and anyone on the team has the option to participate or abstain. The most remarkable thing about this group is the way it’s reaching out to opposing teams and inviting them into the prayer time. CHS FCA is advised by Mr. Ty McMillen. THEATER NEWS

Come support the CHS Theatre Arts fall production of The Importance of Being Earnest. Show times are on October 8 and 9 at 7 p.m. and October 10 at 2 p.m. at the Carson City Community Center. Tickets are $10 for General Admission or $5 for CHS students with student body card. Seating is limited, so get there early.

GUIDANCE OFFICE NEWS

Any sophomore or junior who’s interested in taking the PSAT, you must sign up at the Finance office by October 9. The test will be $20 and will be given on October 14. Please see your guidance counselor for more information.

Any student interested in taking the ASVAB, please sign up in the Guidance office. The test will be given on the morning of November 20 in the Library.

TED SPEAKER

Open Call for Student Speakers….. Do you have what it takes to be a TED speaker? The basic premise is to approach your TEDx curator with an idea, a really good idea, and then sell it with all of your heart. TEDx isn’t about famous people sharing their biographies; it’s about real people making connections with other real people. HOSA NEWS

On Saturday, Oct. 10 from 8 to 10 a.m., HOSA — Future Health Professionals are hosting a pancake breakfast at Applebee’s on 3300 S. Carson Street. Ticket prices are $10 and can be bought from any HOSA member, Mrs. Gustafson, or Mr. Sakelarios at CHS. Tickets can also be bought at Applebee’s the day of the breakfast. The students will be serving and bussing tables and all money raised will help send them to State and National Competitions. Breakfast will include pancakes, butter, syrup, breakfast potatoes, bacon, and drinks (juice or coffee). Please call Mrs. Gustafson at 283-1710 or Mr. Sakelarios at 283-1756 with questions.

STUDENT OF THE WEEK

This week’s student of the week is Terek Been. Terek is involved in National Honor Society and plays baseball. Terek makes it a point to be kind and respectful to everyone. Thanks for all your hard work Terek!

SENIOR SPOTLIGHT

The Senior Spotlight this week is on Kyndra Holloway. Kyndra has definitely challenged herself with the “tough” classes, taking many AP and/or honors courses every year she’s been enrolled here. All the while she has kept her grades high, attaining a GPA of 4.43.

Kyndra has been, and still is, quite active here at CHS. She has competed in junior varsity cross-country and track and field all 4 years. She was in Link Crew her junior year and a member of the National Honor Society this year and last. She has been a member of HOSA the last 2 years, and currently serves as its president. In competition for HOSA she created a public service announcement about concussions, which was posted around school and earned a fifth place finish at state. She also went to Nationals as president and was able to participate in leadership seminars.

Outside of school Kyndra is the president of the Young Women’s Program at her church which she’s been involved with the last 2 years. She loves to read, watch movies and enjoys running. She would like to attend either Boise State or Oregon State University next year and plans on becoming a physical therapist. Carson High is proud of the accomplishments Kyndra has made and we wish her the best of luck in her future.
