140 years ago

A gentleman from Virginia City concluded he would spend the Sabbath in this quiet little city in the shade of the cottonwood trees. Having indulged too much in “sour mash” he became somewhat obstreperous and was arrested and placed in jail. During his stay in prison, which was about two hours, he kept up such a bellowing that crowds of people were attracted from over a block away. Finally, upon his agreeing to repair to his home in Virginia, he was released and was last seen driving at a 2.40 pace toward Virginia a wiser, if not a better, man.

130 years ago

A waning town. In the year 1862-63 Bodie was a prosperous mining camp. Its mines then petered and it was deserted and remained inactive for more than 14 years. A new find then made mining exciting again. Today, there remains just 500. People say it is just a shadow of its formal self.

100 years ago

Former Governor Oddie was an arrival in Carson Saturday from an outing trip and immediately put at the Arlington Hotel to bed from nervousness and overwork.

Rev. Harry Chapin, cubmaster, presided over the first fall pack meeting of local cub dens which was held last night at the civic auditorium.
