True love causes positive change
One of my earliest memories spotlights a possible juncture in my life — a time when I was 5 years old and my sister was twice my age. She thought it would be cute to put one of her old dresses on me and have me prance about the house. Mom apparently didn’t object, because I continued wearing it until dad came home. When he saw me, he growled, “Take that dress off of that boy and don’t ever do it again!” Any doubt about the nature and purpose of my gender and sexuality was settled forever.
Could it be that simple? Could parental instruction and correction reverse the worldwide explosion of immorality that we’ve witnessed over multiple decades? Is it an act of love to ignore that need, when God our father not only commands it but also disciplines his own children? Correcting our unacceptable behavior is one way that he shows his love, so why do we think that it’s an act of love to approve, support and encourage those things which God condemns?
“God is love” — 1 John Chapters 4 and 5. “Love” that is not built upon the foundation of God’s righteousness is only a word.
The good news is that change is possible. Our children will follow us when we change the direction of our walk in this life and begin to walk with God and his son. Such a change would make an eternal difference.
