Nevada receives $2.4 million to feed needy children during summer

Nevada has been awarded a $2.4 million grant from the federal Department of Agriculture to provide summer food for at risk children.

“Food security remains a persistent problem during the summer months when school is out of session and many children are not receiving school meals,” according to the USDA program statement.

Called the Summer Electronic Benefits Transfer program, it provides a monthly benefit on a debit card that can be used to purchase food at authorized stores.

This year’s program includes two tribal nations and five states including Nevada.

A spokesman said the goal is to serve more than 250,000 children nationwide in those jurisdictions.

Nevada and other states were tasked with expanding the program into more rural areas — specifically in 10 of Nevada’s 17 counties.

“The summer EBT program in Nevada helps cover a critical gap in food security for children who otherwise receive nutritious meals during the school year,” said Beth Handler head of the Child, Family and Community Wellness office in the state’s health division.
