We heartily congratulate our friend upon this auspicious consummation of his long cherished hopes, and promise him on behalf of his many friends a hearty welcome for himself and bride on their arrival at their future home.

Death of Si Waugh: Yesterday Si Waugh, an old Chinese merchant, yielded up the ghost in his home in Chinatown in this city. He had been the heavy merchant of Chinatown for a good many years. He waxed fat in trade, drove sharp bargains, was well dressed and dignified. The reporter does not know if he was married or single, and of such is the kingdom of Confucius.

Just at this moment no part of Southern Nevada has the opportunities for prospecting as the section lying adjacent to Groome in Lincoln County. In the early days there was considerable work done in and about Irish mountain; Tem Piute and other camps were started and procured a large tonnage of rich silver or which the “Crime of ‘73” put out of business (Pioche Record).

A flagpole and flag from the historic old Miners Union hall in Gold Hill were dedicated there today in honor of a World War hero and others who lost their lives in the conflict. The pole and flag were dedicated to Lt. Col. Harold Cogswell of Gold Hill who was beheaded by the Japanese after the infamous “death march” following the fall of Bataan.

As a final step before Carson College opens its doors in a few weeks, officials of the school are scheduled to appear before the State Board of Education to petition for a state license.

It’s not just Nevadans who don’t want a nuclear waste dump in their backyard. Leaders of more than 40 citizen groups from 16 states and the District of Colombia met this weekend in the Foresta Institute in Washoe Valley to discuss halting the nuclear waste program.
Trent Dolan is the son of Bill Dolan, who wrote this column for the Nevada Appeal from 1947 until his death in 2006.
